Participants benefit from practical experience gained in 25 years of science communication, marketing and journalism. Short impulses provide interesting information on goals, target groups, methods, tools and quality criteria of science communication as well as on the importance and application of storytelling.

Creative methods such as "Bullshit Bingo", "Scientific Speed Dating", and "Pitch Duel" activate the participants to produce their own formats. The subsequent discussion in a large group enables intensive exchange of experience and knowledge, networking and, of course, good entertainment.

Format: 4 x 90 minutes of interactive group work and 45 minutes of discussion.

Participants: Scientists of TU Clausthal (previous knowledge is advantageous, but not required).

  • The job that suits me" workshop

    Nov. 06-07, 2018, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., seminar room, Aula Academica, Aulastr. 8, Clausthal-Zellerfeld. Registrations until 22.10.2018(graduiertenakademie@tu-clausthal.de).

At the end of their doctoral studies, many are faced with difficult decisions. Not only do they have to tackle their professional entry into the professional world, but they also have to gain an idea of how they envision a successful life with their profession. "The job that suits me" can offer valuable impulses and decision-making aids in this process by way of a position-finding exercise.

Objectives of the workshop Most people reach the point at the end of their doctorate where they want to critically examine their own development path and check the extent to which their idea of a future career matches themselves and their desired life situation. Specific questions might be: - "I am satisfied with my subject! In which direction should I now go professionally? I don't yet have a concrete idea in which professional role I feel comfortable and could be successful." - "I have the opportunity to join a company. Which one suits me - or rather, which company do I actually fit into?" - "My professional focus is clear but what are the overarching qualities that actually define me? What impulses do I want to set? What challenges suit me and how can that be summed up?" - "I am looking for a balance between private and professional life. How can I achieve that?"

The focus of interest is the desire to clarify one's own motives, abilities, inclinations and interests in order to make informed professional decisions. To this end, they develop a clear profile. The workshop "The job that suits me" offers doctoral students this clarification assistance and creates the incentive to deal intensively with the career path and to network with other doctoral students.

Procedure In the workshop "The job that suits me", participants go through a location analysis and gain clarity about their own career goals. The goal is to develop a profile of values, interests, qualifications and skills in a short time and to clarify the question - what do I actually want and where should my professional journey go in the next step. The participants receive essential feedback about their strengths and also weaknesses. It becomes clear to them which fields of activity fit or do not fit. The participants learn the repertoire of "collegial counseling" in the workshop and form peer groups that exist beyond the workshop and serve networking purposes. The peer groups usually meet every six to eight weeks. During these appointments, participants consult with each other about their individual professional concerns. Beyond the workshop, the peer groups offer support in professional clarification as well as social support. To support and promote the process of networking, both peer groups have another appointment with the coach after about half a year.

Target group: Young academics and professors

Effective time management, sensible goals and priorities, as well as thoughtful planning and implementation of tasks are among the most important skills for coping well with the diverse demands and often complex tasks in the university context. In addition to a high ability to cope with stress, the work requires above all good tools in the form of practicable planning techniques, self-organization methods and relief strategies. In this two-day workshop, you will learn how to realistically plan and coordinate your areas of activity (teaching, research, administration, dissertation, etc.). You will analyze and reflect on your personal work style, find suggestions for daily or weekly organization as well as for strategic planning, coordination and implementation of longer-term plans (e.g. project, annual planning). Our seminar motto is: Work smarter, not harder. At the end of the workshop, you will have numerous suggestions, techniques and action strategies that can be immediately integrated into your work life.

    Objectives:

    Participants will...

    • know their personal strengths and weaknesses in time management.
    • know how they can best set priorities and achieve their goals.
    • gain valuable impulses for operational and strategic task management.
    • develop individual action strategies for upcoming plans/projects.
    • know and try out how to recover well and balance work.
