TUC graduate academy and TUC writing lab give you the opportunity to advance your dissertation project by joining a writing group with fellow TUC doctoral students sharing the same objective and experiencing similar challenges. Dissertation writing groups create a supportive environment and generally consist of three activities: 1. Fellow doctoral students provide you with helpful feedback, and, vice versa, present their papers to you and ask for your opinion. 2. As a group member, you are invited to ask questions openly in order to cope with typical dissertation challenges and give intellectual and organisational advice peer-to-peer. 3. Writing groups literally write together (you work on your own text in one room with others and at the same time), using innovative writing techniques and thus render writing a more social and even elating activity. Focus, range, and interval of the group sessions are dependent upon the Writing Groups needs and preferences. During the workshop, you will realize the formation of autonomous writing groups, consisting of 3-5 members. In order to organize effective follow-up sessions you will practically learn how to plan and execute such meetings. Selected feedback and writing techniques let you experience how to produce and revise your texts efficiently. Above all, getting to know other doctoral students across disciplinary and institutional boundaries will help you feel the wide and motivating range of TUC graduate writers. Requirements for participation: ´ • min. ½ to max. 1 page summarizing/introducing your dissertation project • min. 1 to max. 2 pages of a research paper/article/ book chapter (working Paper, not finished or reviewed, „raw material“) (both texts in English, print-out) Learning Targets: 1. • Workshop WORKSHOP: "CAREER COACHING - MY CAREER PROFILE".

    June 30-July 01, 2020, 9 a.m.-6 p.m., videoconference. In German language. Registrations until 23.06.2020(graduiertenakademie@tu-clausthal.de).

The seminar is aimed at researchers who are curious to explore a professional position-finding process.

What is the seminar about? At the end of their doctorate, many are faced with difficult decisions. Not only do they have to tackle their professional entry into the professional world, but they also have to gain an idea of how they envision a successful life with their profession. "Career coaching" can offer valuable impulses and decision-making aids in this process by way of a location determination.

Objectives of the workshop Most people reach the point at the end of their doctorate where they want to critically examine their own development path and check to what extent their idea of a future career corresponds with themselves and their desired life situation. Specific questions might be: - "I am satisfied with my subject! In which direction should I now go professionally? I don't yet have a concrete idea in which professional role I feel comfortable and could be successful." - "I have the opportunity to join a company. Which one suits me - or rather, which company do I actually fit into?" - "My professional focus is clear but what are the overarching qualities that actually make me me? What impulses do I want to set? What challenges suit me and how can that be summed up?" - "I am looking for a balance between private and professional life. How can I achieve that?" The focus of interest is the desire to clarify one's own motives, abilities, inclinations and interests in order to make informed professional decisions. For this purpose, they develop a clear profile. The workshop "Career Coaching - My Career Profile" offers doctoral students this clarification assistance and creates the incentive to deal intensively with their career path and to network with other doctoral students.

Workshop procedure In the workshop, the doctoral candidates go through a location analysis and gain clarity about their own career goals. The goal is to develop a profile of values, interests, qualifications and skills in a short time and to clarify the question - what do I actually want and where should my professional journey go in the next step. The participants receive essential feedback about their strengths and also weaknesses. It becomes clear to them which fields of activity fit or do not fit.

Teaching methods: The didactic-methodical focus is on practical work and experience-oriented exercises in changing small groups, supported by the coach. This group work is supplemented by short theoretical inputs and reflection rounds in the plenum as well as collegial consultation. Different analysis models are used to approach the topic from different perspectives.

The methods and procedures in the recruiting process are changing due to the use of the Internet and new media - nevertheless, one thing remains the same in essence: as an applicant, you must be able to describe to the employer in a brief and address-oriented manner that you are the right person for the job.

Before applying, however, it is important to know your own skills profile and how you can identify interesting jobs or activities. - And after the written application, if you are successful, there is an oral or practical interview situation. Not only in the field of written applications are there new trends in recruiting, but also the "classic interview" is no longer the only tool used in the selection process.

In the workshop you will learn how to put your personal profile into words in a convincing and addressatenorint way and how to design a cover letter and a meaningful CV on this basis - with concrete reference to a job advertisement or (in the case of speculative applications) with reference to a field of work and an employer.

One focus of the workshop is to address applications via online portals and the new online recruiting trends - another: everything important about job interviews and assessment situations.

    Participation:

    • To participate, you will need a laptop or computer with audio/video capability (microphone and camera). You will also need a stable internet connection.
    • You will receive an individual login code for the Moodle course room for the workshop no later than 10/16/2020.
    • Preparation phase - prerequisite for participation: approx. 2h, free time allocation, 16-21.10.2020: in the Moodle course room you will find material and tasks for preparation. These assignments will be supervised by the trainer if needed.
    • On the two online dates, we will work together on interactive learning situations from 9am to approx. 1.30pm (short breaks) each time.
    • Transfer phase: approx. 2h, free time allocation, 24-30.10.2020: in the Moodle course room you will receive feedback on documents, application profiles, etc., can ask further questions and exchange ideas with trainer and the other participants.

  • Online Workshop "Negotiating According to the Harvard Principle

    03-04.11.2020, 9-17 h, In German. Register by 10/19/2020(graduiertenakademie@tu-clausthal.de).

Why do some people succeed easily in achieving their goals, while others tend to lose out? Negotiation is a craft that can be learned and for which there are tools and strategies.

Negotiation is our daily business. We do it day in and day out and in very different situations and contexts: We negotiate about objectives at work, about the salary we want to earn, about vacation, or even how tasks can be distributed sensibly and fairly.

In the process, most people do not think about how they go about it. Often this happens unconsciously and rather intuitively - usually with very different results.

Objectives of the workshop The objective of this workshop is to consciously deal with your personal negotiation behavior and to improve it in order to be able to deal professionally and successfully even in difficult situations and with challenging negotiation partners.

Central guiding questions are: - Which negotiation strategies do I use and how can I be successful and achieve good results? - How can I achieve more than a compromise in difficult negotiation situations and with difficult partners? - How do I succeed in negotiating fairly with the negotiating partner and at the same time tough on the issue? - How can I consciously integrate negotiation strategies into my everyday life and assert myself better?

The workshop is about how you can develop negotiation strategies that are really convincing and find new ways in impasses to develop common goals from opposing positions. You will learn to assess others in terms of their personality and negotiation behavior. You will learn procedures, strategies, methods and attitudes of negotiation according to the principles of the Harvard Concept and put these into practice in negotiation exercises. You will have the opportunity to bring in your own negotiation situations, to try them out and to receive feedback in order to improve your negotiation skills.

Didactic - methodical means: In order to reach the participants* in a sustainable and practical way, the didactic-methodical focus is on the application of the theory on the basis of own "hotspot topics" in the cooperation as well as the collegial exchange and consultation in the group.

  • Online training (with interactive portions) "Do I have time for research data management?"

    09.12.2020, 14-16 h, in German language. Registration until 25.11.2020(graduiertenakademie@tu-clausthal.de).

As a scientist, one increasingly stumbles upon topics such as data management plans, reusability of research data, or research data repositories. There is also a tendency to simply refer to the preservation of "good scientific practice". Often, the topic comes up shortly before an important deadline, so that quick measures are required.

The question may be allowed at this point, who can still find the time to do extensive research for such a topic - in addition to his work in the laboratory, at the test bench or the literature research. (But if it does become important for one's own work, one quickly gets into a time crunch or asks someone who seems to know about it).

This is where the training on research data management should come in: what can be done already at the beginning of the research project, so that when such a problem arises, it can be handled without additional effort. Even small measures to adapt the daily work can lead to great time savings in the long run. Especially the aspect "arranging and structuring" should be considered in the context of research data management and will be explained during this event.

Of course, we will also get to know the tools and aids already available at TU Clausthal. Research data management is not the same for every scientist and not for every discipline, so bring your questions and problems to the event.

The event will be livestreamed via BBB. Access details and a small pre-survey on thematic focus will be emailed well in advance of the event.
